The Space In Between Design, 1

office_vassar

For quite some time I have been interested in what I call ‘the space in between design’.  While we can all point to great design with admiration and amazement, I have often wondered about the context in which the design was created.  If you attend lectures by famous designers you will always hear the the quirky stories of how these semi-awkward, semi-narcissistic design creatures ended up with such amazing projects. IT In A Small Design Start Up. Part 2

h2-section2This week I thought I’d talk about how we use the Web in our design firm.

Communication and technology in any business is extremely important to keep day to day operations flowing smoothly. As a small design firm we are faced with a few specific challenges that parallel challenges that you might find in a larger firm. We have found that our Web presence is an extremely important component that represents us to our clients.

Cisco’s new Energy Wise Product

cisco-2

cisco-11

Cisco recently announced their new product “Energy Wise”.  Energy wise simply uses Cisco’s command over most networks to measure, assess, and control energy consumption among all devices connected to a network.  The devices range from IP phones, computers, routers, lights all the way to HVAC systems.  For a company heavily invested in the infrastructure of data transfer this seems to be the next logical step.

Foxmarks.. the amazing bookmark sync tool

foxmarks

I recently stumbled upon one of the greatest organization tools I have seen in some time.  Foxmarks is the name of the company that produces a software that will sync your bookmarks between different browsers, computers, and even operating systems.  It’s just plain seemless.   Check it out at  www.foxmarks.com.

mission motors electric motorcycle

This beautiful beast comes from the prominent industrial designer Yves Behar.

“designed to be the fastest 100% electric motorcycle”

I’m posting this because I like and dislike the realization.  Although, I’m mostly in awe.  There is a lot of talent involved in making these lines scream “sexy” the way they do.

It may be too “ID” and soft but I’d like to see this on the road.

Tuesday

Another day is done… well at least here at the University.  I saw some great student work today and even more importantly some great student potential.  I’m off to absorb massive amounts of IT data…  If only we had firewire 800 ports in the back of our heads to upload data… i’d even settle for slow bluetooth.

IT in a small design start up. Part 1

books

I decided I’d relfect on the past 3 years of my design office and it’s issues with IT.  This will be a multi-part series.

What we do:  My partner and I started our practice (local design office) with the ‘pie in the sky’ idea that we’d find a way to design without clients.   Ha Ha Ha… laugh for at least 3 minutes.  Needless to say we are still working on this. Teaching helps.
