Action Method : Quick Review

So it’s been a few months now and after reading the book Making Ideas Happen, I thought I’d write about how we put the books proposed Action Method to a test.  Both myself and Sophia, my partner at Local Design Office have been using the system.

IT in a small design start up. Part 1

books

I decided I’d relfect on the past 3 years of my design office and it’s issues with IT.  This will be a multi-part series.

What we do:  My partner and I started our practice (local design office) with the ‘pie in the sky’ idea that we’d find a way to design without clients.   Ha Ha Ha… laugh for at least 3 minutes.  Needless to say we are still working on this. Teaching helps.

Mission Accomplished

cbcom

On my first blog .. still at cordbowen.wordpress.com,  I commented that I’d like to move to a personal domain address and better control the html.  well…

This is the result of a successful attempt to obtain a domain. upload Wordpress 2.7, download this awesome theme, modify the ‘php’, and post this …

How I did it:

-registered my domain (www.cordbowen.com) I did this with Yahoo a few months back.  They are a pretty reliable service, but their maintenance fees can get high if you have multiple domains.

-signed up with Bluehost (www.bluehost.com)  Great service package!  $5.95 a month for two years.  Although you have to pay that up front.  They will support unlimited domains with unlimited storage.  The only complaints I found were a recent server exchange resulting in some downtime and if you get too big they will force you out.

-re-pointed my DNS to Bluehost.  This tells any one going to my domain that the Bluehost servers are hosting and not the Yahoo servers where I initially signed up for my domain.  Note: you can also register domains through Bluehost.

-This is where it gets cool.  Bluehost has a one click WordPress publishing upload with the latest version.  Here you get a basic template and access to an identical dashboard as the public wordpress.

-Now it was time to upload the perfect theme.  With my own domain I am able to access thousands of themes.  After a couple of hours of sifting through muddy graphics, I found an excellent theme based on the type face Helvetica Neue.  Beautifully balanced, this theme relies on structure and weight.   Although some of the editing preferences have to executed in the code it is mostly dashboard accessible.

-To get the files uploaded I used the educational version of ‘Fetch’ for  access to my ftp (file transfer protocol) site.

-The rest is in the details of graphic management.   This is where I get lost in fantasy.
